Silk Brocade

Location: Iran, or perhaps Turkey

Materials: satin lampas

Dimensions: 104 x 33cm

Accession Number: TXT 150

Other Notes:

The pattern is an ogival lattice formed by chains of florets, enclosing medallions with an arabesque filling. The green ground originally had lavish arabesques in black. The textile has been variously published as Timurid and as Safavid, but, while a date of 1450–1500 is acceptable, the design relates more to the decorative arts of Ottoman Turkey in this period, particularly binding and illumination.
