Other Notes:

The sides of the inkwell bear eight-petalled rosettes in a network of interlacing chains and the lid, a benedictory inscription broken by more eight-petalled rosettes. The handles at the side, aligning with loops on the lid, allowed the inkwell to be carried in a leather sling.
