This casket was presented by H.H. the Shahzada Nasralla Khan of Afghanistan to H.R.H. the Duke of Connaught in recollection of his visit to England. The inscription on the lid – in gold set with diamonds – reads, al-sultan dhill Allah (‘The sultan is the shadow of God’).
The gift was accompanied by a note, ‘This little trifle, namely one casket of lapis lazuli is sent by way of remembrance from Shahzada Nasrulla Prince of Afghanistan, in token of his personal friendship to H.R.H. the Duke of Connaught. Wednesday 12 Rabi al awal 1313 Hijri i.e. 3rd Sept. 1985.’
